Best mowing practices

Do you know the impact you can have on your lawn just by how and when you mow it? If not then keep reading for some useful tips on grass height, when the best time to mow is, and more!

What is the ideal height my grass should be after I’ve mowed it?

The length of your grass after you mow it should be 3”, and you should never cut more than 1/3 off the top of your grass at a time.  Cutting your grass any shorter than 3” or more than 1/3 of the grass length at a time leads to issues, such as stressing the grass out which weakens your lawn. Leaving your grass taller when you mow it is ideal and has great benefits including a stronger, deeper root system and it shades soil which retains moister and helps prevent weed seeds from germinating.

Wet lawn: to mow or not mow?

Never mow when the grass is extremely wet. It’s difficult to do seeing the grass tends to lie down and mat, and also this can risk compacting the soil as well as spread plant diseases. You can mow however when it’s moderately wet, just adjust your mower’s cutting height slightly higher than normal to accommodate for the moisture. The most ideal time to mow though is before it rains. This allows you to mow at the correct height and doesn’t create any problems like compacting the soil or ruts in your lawn.

Should I remove the grass clippings?

Grass clippings should ideally be left on your lawn to decompose naturally. This serves as a way to add nutrients to the soil as the grass clippings are high in protein. The only time you’d want to remove the grass clippings is if they were very long and smothering your lawn.

How often should I sharpen my mower blades?

Your mower blades should be kept razor sharp at all times, which may require them to be sharpened multiple times a year. This helps to prevent disease as the sharper and cleaner the cut is, the faster the blades of grass seal up after you’ve mowed the lawn.

Some other lawn mowing tips to keep in mind:

  • Try to avoid cutting your lawn during the hottest part of the day
  • Alternate your cutting pattern
  • Shaper mower blades means increased mower grass efficiency
